About the Class

Purdue University offers a wide variety of Computer Graphics classes at their Polytechnic Institute. CGT 11600 served as a basic introductory course to 3D modeling that most computer graphics majors must take. The course mainly served as a foundational overview that all computer graphic majors should know in their future careers.

A core introductory computer graphics course that provides entry-level experiences in geometric modeling. Students develop geometric analysis and modeling construction techniques and processes to produce accurate computer models for graphic visualization and communication. The program we learned was the modeling program Maya by Autodesk.

Final Project

Final Project: Kid's Playroom

March 2018 - May 2019

All throughout the semester, our projects followed a toy theme. The final project connected them all and required me to make a play area on a table or play mat in a child's room. I was required to make three toys, a light source, and at least two walls in the room (like a diorama). The three toys that I chose were: a Thomas the train set, a Lincoln log set, and a Little Tikes Push and Ride. All three of these toys (and many more that I had anticipated to model) were all big parts of my childhood.

Some of the biggest challenges I had throughout the project was that two of my toys were set-based. Not only was I making individual toys, but also the additional set pieces that go along with it. The Thomas the train set ended up having 8 train cars (including Thomas, Percy, James, Toby, Bulgy, Clarabel, box car, cargo car and Sodor line caboose) 8 track pieces, and 4 specialty pieces!

The Lincoln logs pieces were much easier to create because they were so repetitive and the measurements were constant. Once all the log pieces were made, I put together the pieces into various house sets found online. The hardest part about my last toy, the Little Tikes push and ride racer was the difficulty that the object was not a geometric shape. The racer required a lot of close detail form modeling and working with soft edges. The filler items (i.e. sports balls and picture frames) were quickly made to add more detail to the scene.

This project was easily my most favorite to do because of the nostalgia alone. I already love modeling objects but adding the aspect of making all of my favorite toys when I was a kid made it much more enjoyable. I am proud of the work I produced and now have a passion to make more scenes like this just on my own time!

Supplemental Projects

January 2018 - February 2019

This assignment was one of my first big assignments, implementing all the tools that I learned. I was instructed to create a marble track similar to the game Marble Madness.

For my model, the marble would start at the top and carefully work its way down without falling off.

For this next assignment, I was instructed to create a castle after learning all the various edit mesh tools in Maya.

For my model, I decided to make a castle based closely to the Alcázar of Segovia in Spain. The only complications I had for this project was finding big enough textures for such large of a texture.

After the castle came one of the hardest models I had to make. I was instructed to create any character I wanted. After searching through orthographies of many types of characters, I found "Leo".

For my model, I decided to make a character based closely related to the concept art below. What made this model so difficult was all the organic shapes that went in to making it.

For the last assignment before the final, I was instructed to create a plant arrangement where I learn to make vines and leaves.

For my model, I decided to add an additional side table and lawn chair to make an out door arrangement.

Building Blocks

Building Block Models

January 2018 - February 2019

Continuously throughout the semester, we were required to build 3D models of unit blocks. There was no set design of what we needed to make out of the unit blocks but rather new pieces would be added each week.

Some of the best parts about this course was that no project had a limit and could be pushed to whatever you wanted it to be. For most of these wooden sets, I looked up visual compositions with these blocks.
