ABOUT ME

 Shayne Piskule

Hello, my name is Shayne Piskule. I am currently a student at Purdue University studying to get my degree in both Building Information Modeling and Virtual Product Information. It may seem like a mouthful but really it is just learning the newest forms of technology in 3D modeling for both construction and manufacturing. I have been in classes like these ever since my sophomore year in high school and quickly fell in love with it. My computer-aided design (CAD) teacher gave me the freedom to work on my own passion projects all throughout high school. I worked on projects from small 3D-printed knick-knacks for my friends to completely redesigning classrooms for teachers. Just recently, I got to see some of my classroom redesign projects come to life once the school was able to get funding for the projects. My favorite part about all of this is seeing what you have created all come together in a fantastic end result.

My high school CAD teacher was one of the earliest mentors to get me passionate about the construction industry. Around early junior year of high school, he had pushed my class to apply to an Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (or ACE) mentorship program. This program was a once a week and took place in Chicago, about an hour from where I lived. I was accepted into the program and quickly realized it was going to be a huge commitment. The mentorship was for high school students to learn the logistics of the construction industries with volunteering architecture, construction management, and engineering companies. Halfway through the program, we were able to start our own projects to be submitted into a nationwide competition. In one of my years, our mission was to create a proposal for a “Barack Obama Presidential Library” to commemorate his time in office and we actually ended up being the runner-up team in the nationwide competition. I was able to meet some of the actual designers for the library set to open this year and it was surprising how many similarities our team had with the actual design without knowledge of each other's work. In the end, the ACE mentorship program gave me some of the best experiences and connections I could have asked for.

 ACE AWARDS

 NIGHT 2018

Now, years have passed and my passion to learn continues. My first summer out of high school I was lucky enough to get an internship from the ACE mentorship program with the construction management company, Mortenson. I was able to work alongside civil engineers, contractors and architects as we worked to complete the construction of a new MercyHealth Hospital about an hour away from my house. Mortenson had me focus on a lot of the punch list work all throughout the hospital right up until the last couple months of completion. I am now able to drive past the beautiful, 6-floor hospital anytime I am driving up to visit my sister in Wisconsin. This most recent summer, I switched roles to a different side of the construction industry, architecture. Let me just say, I quickly noticed the visible attitudes that the two fields have towards one another. I had another internship with a small high-end residential architecture firm, called Orren Pickell Builders. With this internship, I felt a lot more helpful because what I was learning in school was now benefitting my work. I was helping with drawing construction documents for them and even showing them better ways of doing it that they didn’t even know existed! By the end of the summer, the architect I worked with even mentioned that he hadn’t had all this free-time before since we collectively had worked through all his projects.

Even though most of my time in both studies and work have been through construction, my true aspiration is to give an amazing product to someone, whether that be designing a home or manufacturing a piece. What ways can I improve your company?
